Love With Your Eyes Open

February is here, and as we come off a long Valentine's weekend, it's the perfect time to talk about relationships and love. And since love is one of my favorite topics, I'm excited!

The love junkie in me lives for a good love story. The butterflies, the deep conversations, the kind of connection that makes you forget about time. Sigh. But love isn’t just about those early highs. It’s about who’s still standing beside you when shit get real.

So why do so many of us miss the mark?

Your best friend gave you the look. Your gut was whispering are you sure? But you were too caught up in their charm, the late-night texts, the effortless chemistry, to notice the blazing red flags.

Actually, you probably noticed on some level. You just chose to ignore it. Because it felt good in the moment.

Why We Overlook Red Flags

I get it. I’ve been there too. It had been a while since I was in a relationship, and on paper, this person checked some of my boxes. But looking back, they fell flat on the things that actually mattered.

If we hadn’t had fundamental differences in parenting, I can see how easy it would have been to get caught up in something that wasn’t good for me. I felt like I couldn’t fully be myself. I had to over-explain things just to keep the peace. They didn’t like how social I was. And the way they moved through relationships, keeping people around when it was convenient and discarding them when they weren’t. This said more about them than I wanted to admit.

That’s the thing about love. It fires up the brain’s reward center while lowering activity in the prefrontal cortex, the part responsible for judgment and critical thinking. In other words, love can feel intoxicating… literally.

So how do you keep your head on straight when your heart is all in?

You don’t have to be jaded to be smart about love. It’s about balancing emotional connection with clear observation.

Attraction is easy. Alignment is everything.

How to Know If Someone Is Right for You

Before you invest your heart, take a step back and look beyond the spark. Here’s what to pay attention to.

Emotional Intelligence Over Surface Attraction

Confidence. Charisma. The way they make you laugh. It’s magnetic. But what happens when things aren’t fun?

  • Do they take responsibility when they’re wrong?
  • Handle stress in a healthy way?
  • Show empathy and emotional awareness?

Chemistry matters, but how someone handles conflict, disappointment, and stress will shape your relationship far more than physical attraction ever will.

Consistency Over Potential

People will tell you who they are, but their patterns will tell you even more.

  • Do they follow through on their words?
  • Treat people with respect when no one’s watching?
  • Show up consistently, or do they love-bomb and disappear?

If you’re waiting for their potential to catch up with their actions, you’re dating a fantasy, not a reality.

Do Your Values Align?

Opposites can attract, but core values have to match.

  • Do you see the future the same way? Marriage, kids, lifestyle?
  • Do you share beliefs about honesty, commitment, and trust?
  • Are your priorities aligned, or are you constantly pulling in different directions?

Passion alone won’t bridge a values gap. Alignment creates peace. Mismatched priorities create friction.

Pay Attention to Their Social and Relationship History

How someone handles relationships, romantic, friendships, even work connections, tells you everything about how they’ll show up for you.

  • Do they have healthy, long-term friendships?
  • Take ownership for past mistakes, or is every ex crazy?
  • Do they respect people, even when they don’t need something from them?

Their past isn’t always a red flag, but their patterns will show you a lot.

Can You Be Yourself?

If you have to shrink, suppress, or over-explain yourself just to keep them interested, they’re not your person.

  • Do they celebrate your quirks, or make you feel self-conscious?
  • Can you be honest about your needs without feeling like you’re “too much”?
  • Do you feel safe expressing yourself, even when you disagree?

Love should expand you, not shrink you. If you can’t be your full self, why be with someone?

Journal Prompt

Think about a time when you ignored a red flag or overlooked something important for the sake of chemistry.

  • What drew you in?
  • What did you learn from the experience?
  • How can you use that lesson to make more aligned choices moving forward?

Love With Clarity, Not Just Chemistry

Attraction is the easy part. It's instant. Real compatibility takes intention. Instead of getting lost in the moment, ask yourself:

  • Is this person truly good for me?
  • Do they add to my life, or do they leave me drained?
  • Can I grow with them, or will I outgrow them?

You don’t have to ignore chemistry, but don’t let it trick you into thinking you have connection where you don’t.

When you use both your heart and your head, love doesn’t have to be blind.

It can be clear, conscious, and beautiful.
