The Lie We Tell About Emotional Intelligence
People throw the term emotional intelligence around like it's a vibe. Like it means someone who speaks gently, listens well, and never makes them uncomfortable.
New Flash...That's not what it is.
Real emotional intelligence is awareness with a backbone. It’s being able to clock patterns and speak to them clearly. It’s saying, You’re not emotionally unavailable, you're avoidant because you're scared of being seen. Or, You’re not setting boundaries, you’re stonewalling so you don't have to deal with hard conversations. Damn.
It’s not soft. It’s sharp. And most people can’t handle it.
They say they want honesty until it shows up. They say they want connection until someone asks them to show up differently. The moment the mirror is too clear, they run. Or they call the other person difficult. Too deep. Too emotional.
The truth is, most people don’t want emotional intelligence. They want emotional flattery. They want someone who understands their wounds without holding them accountable for how they bleed on others.
They want connection without correction.
But growth doesn’t happen without discomfort, trust me, I know. You can’t evolve in relationships if you shut down every time someone calls you out...calmly, respectfully, but directly.
That emotionally aware partner you think you want? They're out there. But they won't play small to keep the peace. They won’t shrink themselves to protect your image of yourself.
They’ll speak the truth. And the truth doesn't always feel good.
So be honest...do you want emotional intelligence or emotional indulgence?
Because those are not the same thing.
