Is It Love or Infatuation?

Is It Love or Infatuation?

How do you tell the difference when it feels amazing but unclear?

As a self-proclaimed love junkie, I know and love the rush of meeting someone new...those first few months of dopamine highs and love-drunk infatuation that feel a lot like love. It’s easy to get swept up in the spark, the attention, the energy. Everything feels electric, and full of possibility.

It’s easy to call that love.
But sometimes, it’s not.

Sometimes... it’s infatuation.
And the shitty part is, love and infatuation can feel exactly the same at first.

So how do you tell the difference?

Here are a few questions I come back to, especially when everything feels intense and amazing too soon:

1. Do you love who they are...or just how they make you feel?

Infatuation is all about the feeling. The rush. The validation.
Love is about the person. You care for them even when they’re not actively feeding your ego or meeting your needs in the moment.
If the connection fades as soon as the attention shifts, it probably wasn’t love.

2. Are you seeing them clearly...or just who you want them to be?

This one stings. In the beginning, it’s easy to fill in the blanks with what you hope is true. You romanticize the version of them you’ve created in your head.
But love doesn’t need the fantasy. It sees what’s real.
Ask yourself—do you love them, or the idea of them?

3. Is it real...or just moving fast because it feels good?

Infatuation rushes. It wants to skip steps, dive in headfirst, and live in the high.
Love doesn’t panic. It takes its time. It breathes.
If it disappears the second you slow down, that says everything.

4. Are you in love with their potential...or their reality?

A lot of us fall for the glimpses. The could-be. The almost.
But love doesn’t live in the future. It lives in the present.
If nothing ever changed, would you still want to stay?

5. Do you feel safe...or unsettled most of the time?

Infatuation can feel like a high, but it’s often unstable.

Love feels steady. It calms your nervous system.
If you’re constantly anxious, overthinking, or questioning where you stand—that’s not love. That’s survival mode.

We’ve all been there...no shame in it

We’ve all mistaken infatuation for love. It doesn’t make you naïve. It makes you human.

But love, the real kind, is honest. It’s consistent. It doesn’t just make you feel wanted...it makes you feel safe.

It’s not about how quickly you connect.
It’s about how deeply you grow.

And if you’re unsure where you stand, pause. Ask questions.
Love won’t disappear just because you slowed down.

If it’s real, it will wait for you to catch your breath.
