National Hispanic Heritage Month: Epsy Campbell Barr

As we celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month, we take time to reflect on the powerful contributions made by individuals from our Hispanic and Latino communities. It’s not just about acknowledging cultural richness, but also about shining a light on those who have fought to ensure equity, justice, and representation for all. Among those leaders is Epsy Campbell Barr, an amazing figure who broke new ground for Afro-Latinos and women across Latin America.

Breaking Barriers and Setting New Standards

When Epsy Campbell Barr became Costa Rica’s first Afro-Latina vice president in 2018, it marked a historic milestone—not just for her, but for all of Latin America. As the first Afro-Latina woman to ever hold such a position, her rise to power was a significant moment for both the Black and Latino communities. It signaled progress in regions where Afro-descendants have often been excluded from political and social representation.

But Epsy’s story isn’t just one of political achievement—it’s one of persistence and purpose. Her life's work has been driven by a deep desire to create more inclusive spaces, where people of all races and backgrounds can thrive.

A Lifelong Advocate for Justice

Born in 1963 in Costa Rica to Jamaican immigrant parents, Epsy Campbell Barr grew up facing both racial and social inequities. These experiences fueled her passion for social justice from a young age. Her deep commitment to racial and gender equality led her to co-found the Afro-Costa Rican Women’s Center, which advocates for the rights and well-being of Afro-descendant women and girls.

Epsy’s work has never been confined by borders. Her advocacy extends beyond Costa Rica, as she has become a powerful voice for Afro-Latinos throughout the Americas. As a public figure and activist, she has tirelessly fought to ensure that Afro-descendant communities across the region are recognized, respected, and given the opportunities they deserve.

Championing Afro-Latino and Women’s Rights

One of Epsy’s most significant contributions is her relentless pursuit of racial and gender equality. She has worked at the local, national, and international levels to fight for policies that address the systemic discrimination faced by Afro-Latinos. Whether it’s advocating for economic rights, educational opportunities, or gender parity, Epsy’s focus has always been on lifting up the most marginalized members of society.

As vice president, she prioritized policies aimed at reducing inequality and increasing the representation of women and Afro-descendants in leadership positions. Her work has inspired a new generation of Afro-Latina women to step into roles of power and influence, knowing that their voices matter.

A Legacy of Empowerment

What makes Epsy Campbell Barr’s legacy so impactful is that her fight for justice and equality doesn’t stop with her personal achievements. She’s committed to ensuring that future generations—especially young Afro-Latinas—have the tools and resources they need to succeed. She believes that true change comes from creating opportunities for others and paving the way for those who come after.

Epsy’s life is a testament to the power of representation and the importance of breaking down barriers. Her leadership serves as a beacon of hope, showing that no matter the obstacles, it’s possible to create meaningful change.

Continuing the Fight for Equity

As we honor amazing women like Epsy Campbell Barr during National Hispanic Heritage Month, it’s a reminder that the fight for equity, representation, and justice is far from over. But with trailblazers like Epsy leading the way, we are inspired to keep pushing forward. Her work is a call to action for all of us to ensure that our Hispanic and Latino communities are places where everyone—regardless of race, gender, or background—can thrive.
