Intuition vs. Ego

 Intuition vs. Ego

Not every gut feeling is wisdom.
Sometimes it's just your wounds and fear talking.

There was a time when I trusted every uncomfortable feeling in my body as truth.

Everything.
If something felt off, I assumed I was right.
If someone changed their tone, I shut down.
If communication slowed, I pulled away before they could.

I thought I was being intuitive and aware.

But over time and through lots of therapy and education, I learned the truth.
My intuition wasn’t the problem. It was real. It was strong.
But it was buried under fear.
And fear has a voice that sounds a lot like instinct when you’re used to survival mode.

Especially in my relationships.
After enough emotional hurt, my body started scanning for danger that wasn’t there.
Small things felt like big threats. My ego stepped in, trying to protect me.
I thought I was being wise.
I was actually just being afraid.

Anxious Attachment Looks a Lot Like Intuition at First

I didn’t know it at the time, but I had an anxious attachment style.
It developed after a very unstable childhood, and early conditioning with love.
My nervous system was always on edge, reading into silence, trying to decode moods, chasing connection, fearing abandonment.

So when something small happened...like a delayed response or a different tone...I spiraled.
My ego told me to react quickly. To retreat or over-explain or say too much.
Then it told me, this is your intuition speaking.

But it wasn’t.
It was my body trying to protect itself from repeating the past.
It was fear disguised as insight.

If you want a deeper breakdown of attachment styles and how they show up in relationships, I wrote a separate article you can read here.

The Real Difference Between Intuition and Ego

Intuition is quiet.
It is calm and grounded, even when it brings hard truths.
It gives you space to think. It encourages clarity. And it definitely doesn’t rush you.

Ego and fear are loud.
They push you to react quickly.
They want to stay in control.
They jump to conclusions and seek certainty before you’ve had time to process.

Here’s how you can usually tell them apart:

Intuition feels like

  • A deep inner knowing
  • A sense of calm awareness
  • A quiet nudge toward or away from something
  • A message that doesn’t need defending

Ego or fear feels like

  • Panic, urgency, or pressure
  • An emotional high or low
  • A need to act now
  • Thoughts that only confirm your existing wounds

Common Ego Responses That Get Mistaken for Intuition

When fear is running the show, it sounds wise at first.

  • I just knew they were pulling away so I shut down
  • I had a gut feeling they were losing interest
  • I always trust my instincts, even if the same patterns keep repeating
  • I don’t tolerate red flags, but never pause to check if they’re actually triggers

When we’re not grounded, fear gets misread as wisdom.
And ego becomes our decision-maker instead of our guide.
It creates distance where there could have been growth.
It breaks connections that weren’t actually broken.

Ways to Tell if It's Intuition or Ego: A Self Check-In

You don’t always need a therapist to figure it out.
Sometimes, slowing down and turning inward is enough to reveal what’s really going on.

Here are a few ways I check in with myself when I’m not sure if it’s my intuition speaking… or just fear:

1. Sit in stillness
Get quiet. No distractions. Let the feeling come up without judgment.
Intuition usually settles you.
Ego keeps you buzzing.

2. Journal without censoring
Write what you're feeling, then write where it’s coming from.
Ask yourself: When have I felt this before
If the answer takes you back to an old wound, it’s probably ego or fear...not present-day truth.

3. Check your body
Real intuition feels grounded in your body..like a solid, clear yes or no
Ego feels scattered. Tight chest. Racing thoughts. Fight or flight energy.

4. Ask one simple question
If I wasn’t afraid of being hurt, what would I choose right now
That one question has saved me from sabotaging more connections than I'd like to admit!

5. Notice the timeline
If the urge to act came fast and strong, it might be ego.
If the clarity arrived gently, even after time passed, it’s more likely intuition.

And here’s something most people don’t want to admit...
We automatically rule out fear as the reason we’re hesitating.
But nine times out of ten, fear is exactly what’s behind it.

We rarely want to say I’m scared...especially when it looks like we’re being decisive or tuned in.
But fear is sneaky. It hides behind logic. It dresses itself up as intuition.
Like when you're about to take a new job and suddenly think, something just doesn’t feel right
Is that your gut… or is it fear of the unknown
Is it the job… or is it the discomfort of stepping into something new

Fear will always try to convince you something is wrong just because it's unfamiliar.
It doesn't like uncertainty.
And diving into anything without knowing the outcome..that’s scary shit.
But unless you name it as fear, you'll keep mistaking it for a sign.

Learning to call it what it is...just fear—is what helps you move differently.

You Got This

Just because it feels strong doesn’t mean it’s intuition.
Sometimes the strongest internal voice is fear trying to avoid being hurt again.
And that fear is smart. It learned how to keep you safe.
But healing is learning to let intuition take the lead instead.

You are allowed to pause.
You are allowed to ask better questions.
You are allowed to wait until the fear settles so the truth can speak.

That’s where the clarity lives. You got this.
