How Two Love Songs Helped Me Discover Self-Love

Music has always been my language, my way of communicating when words feel too hard to say. My late best friend and I used to share songs to express what we couldn’t say out loud. Even now, after he’s gone, music remains a bridge to emotions I don’t always have words for.
Recently, two songs—At Your Worst by Kallum Scott and Unconditionally by Katy Perry—took on entirely new meanings for me. What I once thought were typical love songs became powerful reminders of the most important love we can give: the love we show ourselves.
A Song I Thought I Knew: At Your Worst
For years, At Your Worst has been on my playlist. It’s the kind of song that feels raw, about standing by someone through their hardest moments. But there was always one lyric that bothered me: I would die for you. It felt overly dramatic, even unhealthy to think of sacrificing everything for someone else.
Then, one morning, the song hit me differently. Suddenly, the lyrics weren’t about someone else at all—they were about me. That line wasn’t about dying for another person. It was about standing by myself, loving the parts of me that still carry old wounds. It was about showing up for the child within who still needs protection and healing.
That shift in meaning made me realize At Your Worst is an anthem for self-love, not romance.
Another Layer of Healing: Unconditionally
Around the same time, I also found myself drawn to Unconditionally by Katy Perry. I used to think of it as a classic romantic song, with its sweeping promises of loving someone no matter what. But, like with At Your Worst, I began hearing the lyrics differently.
Katy Perry sings: There is no fear now / Let go and just be free.
It clicked—this wasn’t just a message to a partner. It was a reminder to love myself unconditionally. Without judgment. Without fear. To accept my imperfections and love every part of my journey, even the messy parts.
The Power of Self-Love
These two songs, which I’d long thought of as romantic ballads, became something more profound. They transformed into reminders of how essential it is to love ourselves, not just when we’re at our best, but when we’re at our lowest. To stand by the parts of ourselves that need healing, and to embrace the journey of self-acceptance with unconditional love.
Music has always helped me process emotions, but now I see it as more than just an outlet. It’s a tool for healing, revealing the truths we sometimes need to hear but may not be ready for. Through these songs, I’ve learned that real love—whether for someone else or ourselves—is about showing up with kindness, patience, and a willingness to heal.
I’ll never hear At Your Worst or Unconditionally the same way again. They’ve become powerful anthems of self-love in my life. And maybe they can be for you, too.
What Song is Speaking to You?
So, what about you? What song is speaking to you right now? Maybe there’s one you’ve heard a hundred times, but today, it’s ready to show you something new. Maybe there’s a message in the music waiting for you to hear
Acceptance is the key to be, to be truly free- Katy Perry
